How long have you been skateboarding?
“About 9 years, I first got into it around 7th grade. It was a great social activity back then and I made all my friends skateboarding, but my freshman year of college is when I really got into landing tricks and progressing my abilities. I remember my first deck was a Real, some collab with a tattoo artist, can’t remember who. Haven’t stopped buying DLX boards since. I plan on skating until the end”
Why is education important to you?
“It’s the most surefire way to move up in socioeconomic status. My family moved to the states when I was 5 years old and ever since then, my parents have pushed nothing but education on me. My major is something I’m heavily invested in, mostly because of skateboarding, there’s an old joke about skateboarders making their way into city planning and architecture jobs, I want to work in skateboarding somehow, but I definitely fit into the role of that joke. I’m extremely grateful to be in college today, it’s made me a much more well-rounded person.”
How is the skate scene on your campus? How many students skate?
“When I first began attending here, it was rare to find someone that skated and was on the level. But, thanks to my day-one buddy Jello, we have CSUN Skate Society now, which has been a great addition to the skate scene here. We have a groupchat where we plan sessions and an Instagram page where clips get posted. Other than that, the campus hates skateboarding, and the campus police are quite oppressive. ”
Favorite trick right now?
“Oh man, so many to choose from. Probably Jon Dickson’s gap to bank in his Deathwish Video ender. That’s been on my mind ever since I saw it years ago. If you’re asking about my abilities, a kickflip. ”
Favorite thing about skateboarding?
“What’s there not to love about skateboarding? It’s got the best subculture of all time, it brings all kinds of different people together, and it’s just rad. I can watch, talk, and nerd-out on skateboarding all day. It’s changing every day, it’s opensource and people are constantly improving on one another’s innovations. Some dude looks at a spot, thinks of something out of the box, actually does it, puts the clip up, and then someone else does something completely different down that same spot the next day. Skateboarding is a mentality that only those within it can understand. I love it. “
